Knowing very little on the fundamentals of traveling alone, I enjoyed this piece very much. I came across many insightful tips while reading and definitely learned a thing or two. I constantly found myself thinking "Oh wow!" and "That's such a good point!" after reading certain points of the text. For example, when she wrote about how important it is to use mobile maps while in taxi-cabs so you can keep track of where you are. Also, when she wrote about the importance of packing light.
Something I really appreciated about Cate Huston is that she is a very self-aware person. She knew who she was. She knew her strengths and weaknesses, and I can't help but think about the fact that she must have became so self aware from traveling alone so often. That's something that I found very inspiring. She's discovering herself and who she is while traveling the world on her own. How amazing is that? What a life!
Another reason I enjoyed this piece was that it wasn't a boring list of "How to's". She showed herself in the text - who she is and what she enjoys in life. I feel that I really got to know her after reading the article. Not only have I learned quite a bit about self-traveling, but I have learned that really putting myself, pieces of who I am into my Narrative Essay is essential. Without doing so, my essay will have no heart. No backbone. No purpose.
I agree with you on the whole heartedly making your own narrative "you" perhaps there is room for some mangos in your narrative?
